Day and Meyer, Murry and Young Storage Corporation

            In the early 1900s a problem arose. People began to get wealthier and started to get more objects, like furniture, which created the problem of where to put the old things. Day and Meyer, Murry and Young had an answer to the problem. They created a place for wealthy people to store their most prized possessions and not have to worry about them being damaged or stolen. Their company had a custom building that was made to store portovaults, paintings and rugs, and then allow people to have easy access to their things.

The Day and Meyer, Murry and Young Company answered this problem. In 1927 they built a custom building to store things. Within the building they had custom rails and elevators built to move, store, and house their portovaults. The portovaults were 7x7x11 and had 4 wheels under them in order to move them. They were designed to be able to be loaded on a truck and taken to a client’s home or apartment where they would be packed up and then rolled off of the truck and stored in the building.             They also stored some very expensive items in the basement. They had a special part in their basement built with the intentions of storing rugs. They built this area out of cedar wood in order to keeps moths out of the room and from eating the rugs. In another part of the basement they had a custom space for storing paintings. They have stored everything from multi million dollar paintings to family portraits for museums and private owners. In the third part of their basement there was an area made to store silver.

            They also have a special viewing room for paintings and rugs. It is made with custom lighting so that if the owner of the painting wants to sell it they can do it with ease. They also had a heated room in their basement where people could come and check their portovaults and get items out of them. When they first opened they would advertise “No hunting around in a cold warehouse.” By this they meant that if you wanted to come get an item out of your portovault, they would bring it to you in a warm room compared to how and most other places a person would have to find their things in a cold warehouse.

            The Day and Meyer, Murry and Young building was created for the sole purpose of storing things. This was one of the first storage places of its time. The need for storing items was created through the rise of industrialism in the late 19^th and early 20^th century. The need for storing items is still a big business today. The Day and Meyer, Murry and Young corporation is still in business today in the same building. 

Storage in the Early 1900s Update

In reading about the storage business I have learned how they store the items and how they move them. I have got most of my resources but I still need a few primary resources. 

Storage in the Early 1900s

I am going to write my essay about the storage of personal items in the early 1900s. With the increase of luxury items and multiple houses between the wealthy class, the need to store goods came into play. In New York a place called Day & Meyer was one of the first storage places.

Spending Away

            On average most Americans will spend somewhere around 70 dollars on Halloween. Total there is an expected to be 5.8 billion dollars that is spent on Halloween items all over the US, an almost 17.7% increase over last years. It is really amazing that Americans will still spend this much money on one day, even though how low the economy is. Since 2005 and five the average spending on Christmas has dropped from 860 dollars to 430 almost a 50% decrease. It is really funny how much Americans spend money.

What was the Knight's program?

The knights program was that they would championed an eight hour day and the abolition of child labor, the leaders were interested in long-range reform of the economy.

Why were women excluded from the National Labor Union?

Women were excluded from the National Labor Union because men argued that women were used to drive down their wages.

Immigration

I think it being a nation of Immigrants means that literally the whole nation is made up of immigrants. The United States used to be called “a melting pot” because of all of the immigrants. I think that is would be a really hard thing to immigrate somewhere because you would have to pack up everything that you could and just leave the rest behind. This must have been really hard to do in the late 19^th century because people came to America not having a job or anything there just hoping to get one and have a better life. In my opinion it would take a really brave person to do this.

            These traits of all of the different immigrants and there cultures is really a good thing. It allows the people in America to get a taste of cultures from all around the world. I very connected to my ancestors because they were in the same business that my dad is in today. Watching this film has allowed me to understand what immigrating to America was like. 

Faces of America

The film was about different people and there family tree. The show tracked down and discovered everything there was to know about the different peoples ancestors. Many of them were not really sure about were they come from and others had a pretty good idea. Some of the people discovered disturbing things about there family’s past and other people discovered really good things. Someone might learn that you never know what to expect about your family.

I think it would be a good thing to learn this kind of information. In some cases it could save your life because you could learn about a medical condition that has ran through your family. It would also be a good thing because it could help to explain who you are. 

Rockefeller

I started finding out about John D. Rockefeller and his philanthropy on http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/USArockefeller.htm. It said that he became a very unpopular rich figure at one point in time. He was a devout Baptist and realized that he needed to start giving money to get people to like him. He funded the campaign involved with prohibition. He started a foundation to promote the well-being of mankind.Later on he gave away 500 million dollars to Baptist funds, university's, and to medical research. After he started give money away he became a well liked person.
